Rosa Parks, (1913-), On 1 Dec. 1955, Montgomery AL, USA, Parks defied Jim Crow laws by refusing to sit in the rear seats of a public bus. Her actions spawned a yearlong bus boycott that ended after the US Supreme Court ruling against segregation of transportation; 1996, Presidential Medal of Freedom; 1999, Congressional Gold Medal.
