Dance Advance Grant History 1997

Myra Bazell This new dance will be an evening-length work for eight dancers, and will continue Bazell’s exploration of the integration of movement and emotional content, as well as her investigation of movement on the vertical plane. $ 7,500.00
Nicole Cousineau The choreographer’s new dance will combine elements of the visual, audio and physical, in order to create a work that explores the search for personal language, using five dancers with set design, visual presentation and music by Jorge Lehmann. $ 6,500.00
Hellmut Gottschild Dance Advance support will make possible an intensive nine-month study and exploration of various motional auditory, and behavioral situations - how they inflect, intersect, and transform - leading toward the development of a full length solo performance piece, temporarily called BEING…ALIVE. $ 7,500.00
Suellen Haag Project support will lead to an intergenerational collaboration to create a dance theater duet incorporating the poems of Paul Eluard the art works of Max Ernst. $ 10,000.00
Rennie Harris Funding will support creative time with dancers Floyd Sullivan and/or Dennis Newsome to learn hip hop styles, exchange artistic and historic information, laying groundwork for new work possibly including Sullivan’s choreographing a new dance for Rennie Harris. $ 8,500.00
Roko Kawai To support a commission of NY choreographer Yoshiko Chuma to create a movement work with interactive musicians on Roko Kawai (dancer/choreographer,) David Forlano (movement/sound performer) and two jazz musicians Reggis Workman (bassist) and Oliver Lake (saxophonist.) $ 7,000.00
Ilse Pfeifer The "Urban Mix" is an evening long piece in collaboration with George Evelyn (music) Charles Harp (Script) and seven dancers. They will investigate urban dynamics such as speed, sound, gesture, rhythms, repetition, language and fashion. "Urban Mix" will examine how popular culture has sampled these dynamics, influencing our daily life. $ 7,000.00
LaVaughn Robinson Mr. Robinson will continue to expand his repertoire, incorporating elements of steps he has created in the past, adding new steps, watching his partners and interpreting new forms that come to him. This project will also support rehearsal time for Robinson with his partner Germaine Ingram. $ 8,500.00
Shoba Sharma To support the research and creation of two dance works in the Bharatanatyam Indian classical dance style. The first will be a "Mallari" - a dance of invocation. The second piece will be a "Padam" - a dance of pure time. $ 7,500.00
Paule Turner To support an exploration of human relationship with an odd number of performers. This project will explore the interweaving of scenes of harmony and disruption within the cycles that emerge in relationships couples. $ 7,000.00
Headlong Dance Theater To explore text as a source for choreographing movement. Headlong will work with several dance and theater artists in its research. This will effort will lead to a possible dance theater collaboration with David R. Gammons. $ 13,500.00
Melanie Stewart Dance Theater Choreographer Melanie Stewart intends to commission three artists to work with her to create text and song for a new work. Thought of as a new hybrid, the work entitled "Song Cycle/Cabaret" will combine dance, song cycle and aspects of cabaret in order to tell a story. $ 14,500.00
Pennsylvania Ballet To commission a work by noted choreographer Kevin O'Day. This work will premier during the 1997-98 season, with the hope that it will become an active part of Pennsylvania Ballet's repertoire. $ 16,000.00
Philadanco To create a new work reflecting the influence of choreographer. Joyce Trisler and dance giants Talley Beatty and Laster Horton as part of a three year project, "On the Shoulders of Our Ancestors." $ 16,000.00
Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble To incorporate a Ukrainian dance suite into its active repertory. The new work will be based on the familiar ancient celebration of the Ivan Kupalo festival. $ 13,000.00
