Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble To commission choreographer Evgeny Tsiganok to re-stage for Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble a dance from the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. The dance, "Tsifrovaniy," affords Voloshky the opportunity to explore a region not extensively represented in the company's repertoire. Project dates: Jan. 1996 - May 1996. $ 6,000.00
Karen Bamonte To create "Border Prodigies," an evening-length solo inspired by the mysteries of "autistic savants" whose gifts have been so compassionately explored by the philosopher/psychiatrist Dr. Oliver Sacks. The work will be a collaborative effort involving a composer, visual artist, and designers. Project dates: Sept. 1995 - Apr. 1996. $ 10,000.00
Karen Bamonte Dance Works To support the creation of a new ensemble work of 30-40 minutes' length which will be premiered in December 1995. The project, which will be choreographed by Karen Bamonte, entails collaboration with a composer/sound designer, visual artist, lighting designer, and costume designer. Project dates: Sept. - Dec. 1995. $ 1,500.00
Myra Bazell To support the development of a solo work, "traces," into an evening-length work for six dancers. Project dates: Sept. 1995 - Apr. 1996. $ 10,000.00
Manfred Fischbeck To support the research, planning, writing and rehearsal of a solo work, "Path of Change-Traveling Between Worlds," based on autobiographical data and personal experience of the time between 1940 and 1995. Project dates: Sept. 1995 - Aug. 1996. $ 8,000.00
Group Motion Dance Company To commission choreographers Manfred Fischbeck and Rennie Harris to create a new work in six parts entitled "City - Inner and Outer Landscapes." Project dates: Sept. 1995 - Aug. 1996. $ 14,500.00
Hellmut Gottschild For a collaboration with a visual artist and a composer to create a movement theater work tentatively called "Frogs," combining musical, visual and movement environments with known and invented figures and events and commenting on issues of today's society. Project dates: Sept. 1995 - Aug 1996. $ 10,000.00
Tonio Guerra For the completion of "Tower of Babble," and development of the last two sections of this evening-length work including five ethically specific portrait solos with five dancers, text, sound score, and costumes. Project dates: Oct. 1995 - May 1996. $ 8,840.00
Rennie Harris For the Rennie Harris/Pure Movement Project 95/96. Lead choreographer Rennie Harris, assistant choreographer Clyde Evans, Jr., and three or more hip-hop dancers from Pure Movement will work for three months to experiment with movement and develop works in progress toward the creation of new works for an evening-length program. Project dates: Oct. 1995 - Jan. 1996. $ 10,000.00
Alya Howe To create "Elementals: Water, Earth, Plant, and Animal," a work for six dancers and collaboration with sculptor Todd Gilens, costume designer Althea Unrath and percussionist Toshi Makihara. $ 10,000.00
Roko Kawai To create phase II of the Roko Kawai Project, an autobiographical exploration of the choreographer's Japanese-American experience. Phase II will continue to integrate diverse movement styles, music/sound, and stage design. Project dates: Sept. 1995 - Aug. 1996. $ 8,500.00
Steve Krieckhaus To create a suite of solos incorporating movement, silence, sound/music, and photo-slide images. Project dates: Sept. 1995 - Aug. 1996. $ 6,250.00
Andrew Simonet For the members of Headlong Dance Theater — David Brick, Andrew Simonet, and Amy Smith — to commission choreographer Richard Bull of the Richard Bull Dance Theatre to create a dance work to be developed in rehearsals over a four to six month period. Project dates: Sept. 1995 — Feb. 1996. $ 8,000.00
Melanie Stewart To collaborate with composer Dan Martin and lyricist/visual artist Michael Biello to create a musical dance/theater work to be performed by Melanie Stewart in the 1995/96 season. The work will be an original fairy tale about the fantasy of a performer who finds the "perfect" show. Project dates: Sept. 1995 - Feb. 1996. $ 10,000.00
Melanie Stewart Dance Theater To support the creation of an evening-length production based on two new poems by Eleanor Wilner confronting the issues of contemporary art's response to atrocity. The work, entitled "How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea?" Will be a collaborative effort among the choreographer, poet, composer, visual artist, and designer. Project dates: Nov. 1995 - Mar. 1996. $ 18,500.00
Kariamu Welsh-Asante To choreograph "The Herrero Women," a contemporary African dance that draws from both German and Namibian traditions in music and dress with movement vocabulary drawn from Herrero traditional dances. Project dates: Oct. 1995 - Jan. 1996. $ 9,730.00
