Philadanco To commission choreographer Donald Byrd to create a new work for the company, scored to new music in the jazz/ragtime idiom. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - June 1995. $ 18,000.00
Karen Bamonte To create an hour-long solo work weaving together dance, mime, and text, inspired by the Italo Calvino book, "Difficult Loves." The project will entail n intensive workshop with Daniel Nagrin, who will provide dramatic coaching. Collaborating artists are Lori Novak (visual artist), Lutz Gock (Lighting), Althea Unrath (costumes), Brad Rosenstein (text), and a sound designer/composer yet to be named. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - May 1995. $ 9,350.00
Karen Bamonte Dance Works For the first phase of a full-length work for the ensemble of six dancers, based on the book "Invisible Cities" by Italo Calvino. This work will involve collaboration with a composer to create an original score, and will be shown as a work-in-progress in the Spring of 1995. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - May 1995. $ 18,500.00
Leslie Dworkin To support the creation of an ensemble work for four dancers that incorporates movement exploration and refinement with the integration of dance and video. Videographer/multidisciplinary artist Kent DeSpain will collaborate on the project. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - Mar. 1995. $ 9,000.00
Group Motion Dance Company To commission two choreographers, Iwana Masaki from Tokyo and resident choreographer Manfred Fischbeck, to create a new work in two segments. This project is the second phase of a multi-year project exploring the idea of "Labyrinth" as manifested in folk tales and myths of different cultures. Other collaborating artists are composer Andrea Clearfield, and designers Michael Breaky and Conrad Bender. Project dates: Oct. 1994 - May 1995. $ 15,000.00
Caitlyn Granda To support the creation of a new work about dreams. The project will include three actor/dancers and will involve the recreation of dream sequences through text and movement. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - July 1995. $ 5,000.00
Tonio Guerra To support the creation of "Tower of Babble", a 60-minute work for six dancers satirizing the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. This work will parody the origins and development of world languages and customs, challenging common cultural stereotypes by examining the way people move as they speak. Composer/sound designer Charles Cohen will create an original score. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - Mar. 1995. $ 5,000.00
Alya Howe To support the creation of " Field of Waiting", an evening-length work for five dancers which illuminates the human condition while waiting. The project will involve the collaboration of visual artist Todd Gilens. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - May 1995. $ 5,000.00
Roko Kawai To support phase one of a multi-year, autobiographical exploration of the choreographer’s relationship with Japan through the psychology expressed in traditional Japanese dance. The process will also entail collaboration with five interdisciplinary and multicultural artists: Hiroshi Iwasaki (designer), Toshi Makihara (musician), David Forlano (musician), Jeune Ji (dancer), and Rennie Harris (dancer). Project dates: Sept. 1994 - May 1995. $ 5,000.00
Steve Krieckhaus For the creation of two solo dance/performance works, each of ten to twenty minutes' duration, and including element of sound, music, text, objects, and projected slide images. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - Aug. 1995. $ 6,050.00
Naomi Mindlin In support of the acquisition of two seminal Doris Humphrey solos, "The call/Breath of Fire" and "Quasi-Waltz", by solo dancers Naomi Mindlin and Janet Pilla. The solos will be acquired directly from Ernestine Stodelle who reconstructed the works and is the only expert on their performance. The project will entail complete Labanotation of "Quasi-Waltz" and a two-day Philadelphia residency during which Ernestine Stodelle will conduct two open classes and a lecture. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - Aug. 1995. $ 10,000.00
LaVaughn Robinson For the team of LaVaughn Robinson and Germaine Ingram to develop tap phrasing that will be the percussive element for a composition by jazz musician and composer Odean Pope. Musician Keith Terry and dancer Anne Henry will work with the team to cross the technical divide between "standard" meters and "odd" meters, such as 6/8 or 9/8 time signatures. The resulting project will be a fully collaborative work between the dancers and musicians. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - June 1995. $ 9,700.00
Darla Stanley To support the development of a thirty-minute solo exploring one woman's sensory journey into her past. The project will combine dance, theater, and vocalization in the creation of a new work. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - Feb. 1995. $ 5,000.00
Melanie Stewart To support the creation of a dance theater adaptation of the play "Same Old Story" by Franca Rama in collaboration with director/designer Niall Rea and composer Mick Rossi. Project dates: Nov. 1994 - May 1995. $ 5,000.00
Melanie Stewart Dance Theater To devise an evening-length work developed from "Exercises With Mice and Other animals" (1994). The production will be a collaborative effort between choreographer Melanie Stewart and artists from the United States and Scotland who will create narrative, music, costumes, lighting, and scenery. Collaborating artists Peter Clerke (director), Peter Livingstone (composer), and Karen Tennent (designer). Project dates: Sept. 12-Oct. 15, 1994. $ 11,500.00
Ann Vachon For a reconstruction of Jose Limon's "Symphony for Strings" with music by William Schumann. The work will be set on a group of six independent dancers trained in the Limon style, and the project will involve Labanotation by Ray Cook as well as video documentation of the process. Artistic collaborators include James Payton and members of the original cast who will act as consultants during the reconstruction. Project dates: Sept. 1994 - Aug. 1995. $ 8,000.00
